The SEC Blog will be counting down the top 150 players in the SEC every day, concluding on Aug. 30, at the start of the college football regular season.
69. Michael Williams, No. 89, Alabama Tight End
2011 stats: 16 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns
Strengths
Williams doesn't have career stats that jump off of the page, but the 6'6", 269-pounder is a tremendous weapon in the passing game and as a blocker. He's a large target that's fast enough to create mismatches downfield, and also is a force paving the way for Alabama's stellar running game. If there's such a thing as a dual-threat tight end, Williams is it.
Weaknesses
His impact in the passing game is still relatively unknown. Brad Smelley, Preston Dial and Colin Peek have all played in front of him during his career in Tuscaloosa, and they were much bigger weapons in the for their QBs.
2012 Prediction
Expect Williams to have a big year. The tight end position became a focal point of the passing game late in the 2011 season, and expect that to continue again in 2012. Williams might not have the stats that warrant All-SEC consideration, but his contribution as a receiver and a blocker can't be overlooked.
