Tim Tebow to Give Sermon to Estimated 30K on Easter Sunday

Tim Tebow will become the first quarterback in NFL history to thrill a crowd of tens of thousands on Easter Sunday.

He won't be thrilling anybody with his play on the field (he rarely does). No sir, Tebow will be thrilling a crowd of roughly 30,000 people with an Easter sermon at a church in Georgetown, Texas.

The news comes straight from local TV station KVUE (h/t Pro Football Talk). The good word is that Tebow will be preaching at the Celebration Church, which has cleared 60 acres of land and erected scaffolds and trellises in preparation for Tebow's visit.

Said the appropriately named Joe Champion—a pastor at Celebration Church:

Obviously it's our Super Bowl. Easter is the resurrection of Christ, which we celebrate in our faith. We feel like it's going to be a testimony to the community. We want it to be a family event.

Ah yes, but is this a gathering for the sake of Easter or for the sake of Tebow? Why are 30,000 people really going to be gathering in Georgetown this weekend?

Thankfully, Pastor Champion (that just sounds awesome) says that Sunday's event will not be a Tebow celebration.

“There will be the sacredness of Easter. It's not a Tim Tebow show," said Pastor Champion. "It's not about a celebrity. There's really only one celebrity that we are going to honor and highlight."

Phew. That's a relief.

All kidding and tomfoolery aside, I don't have a problem with this. Shoot, I can't imagine why anybody would. Tebow is just as famous for his faith and his faith-inspired good deeds as he is for heroics (and lack thereof) on the gridiron. Inviting him to deliver an Easter sermon strikes me as being rather appropriate.

You don't have to like it when Tebow displays his faith on the field or in press conferences, but a very special Easter sermon is definitely a proper forum for him to be, well, himself. Haters, do everyone a favor and don't hate.

The report from KVUE says this is a come one, come all event. You don't need a ticket to be there, and nobody is going to be turned away.

If you feel like going, Celebration Church is located on 1202 Rabbit Hill Road in Georgetown, Texas. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m., and Tebow is expected to speak for 20 minutes. All the other necessary info can be found on EasterontheHill.com.

I have to say, I'm tempted to go. It's just not every day that a Berkeley-educated goon like myself gets an excuse to travel to a church in the heart of Texas to take in a sermon by America's most polarizing athlete.

What the heck. It can't be any worse than watching Tiger Woods try to win the Masters.
