Ohio State Spring Game 2012: Urban Meyer Will Restore Attitude to Buckeyes

Ohio State Buckeyes new head football coach Urban Meyer is changing the program, and he's going to bring back a winning attitude.

He's a champion, there's no doubt about it, and that's the attitude that he's installing in his players, even in the offseason.

He doesn't have the luxury of being content.

He's not going to be able to show up at Ohio State and conquer the Big Ten just because he's a huge name.

Sure, his previous two national titles speak volumes about him as a coach, but the proverbial sea isn't just going to part and let the Buckeyes through because he said so.

The Big Ten is a very strong conference nowadays. Gone are the days of the "Big Two and Little Eight," where Michigan and Ohio State dominated the landscape.

If only it were that easy for Meyer...

Now he has to worry about a growing Michigan State program, a quickly rebuilding Michigan, a very powerful Wisconsin and the recently acquired Nebraska.

Winning in the Big Ten is no longer easy, and Meyer has a ton of work to do. The good news is that he's bringing that attitude to his player already. Check out an excerpt from this piece on the Buckeyes' spring game from Rusty Miller of the Associated Press on CoschoctonTribune.com. Pay close attention to the quotes from Meyer:

Meyer praised the effort and enthusiasm, but also recognizes the Buckeyes are far from game-ready. After the scrimmage, and after he had continued the Tressel tradition of joining the team in singing the alma mater in front of the band, he challenged his players.

"Yes, we identified our issues and we also identified our strengths," he said. "I just told them that it has to be the best offseasons in the history of college football. It has to happen ... and it starts Monday."

I dare you to read those quotes and dispute the fact that Meyer is the right coach to turn this program around and restore the Buckeyes' dominant ways.

This is the spring practice we're talking about, but he's already diagnosing strengths and weaknesses and preparing his team to have high expectations. Notice, he isn't hoping to have a good offeseason. He needs to have the best offseason in the history of college football.

This is exactly the attitude that the coach coming into this needed to have, and the fact that Meyer is already displaying it at the spring game is a great sign of things to come for Buckeyes fans.

It's not going to be an easy road, but believe you me, Urban Meyer will restore Ohio State football.
