NHL Playoffs vs NFL Draft

from Lynn Zinser of the New York Times, It is a quirk of the modern sports schedule that pits the first night of the N.F.L. draft against two Game 7s in the N.H.L. playoffs, which is sort of like choosing between Audrey Hepburn or a Kardashian sister. Because yes, everyone will agree nothing rivals a Game 7 for drama and intensity, for players’ pouring their hopes and dreams onto the ice. And yes, it will get killed in the ratings by a parade of large men doing nothing but modeling specially tailored menswear. In today’s world, the Kardashians it is.

Of course, one of Thursday night’s Game 7s is between Florida and New Jersey and well, even Hepburn would be checking out how Robert Griffin III looks in his suit instead of reminding herself these two teams are still playing. But the Rangers and Senators are in the other Game 7, offering enough star appeal and storylines — you may step to the fore now, Marian Gaborik, as Larry Brooks writes in The Post — to snare the viewers who suddenly can’t take another minute of Mel Kiper Jr.’s A) hair or B) know-it-all superiority. In fact, that should be the N.H.L.’s entire marketing plan.
