Anthony Davis is the only sure thing in this year's draft, and the New Jersey Nets will not have a high-percentage chance of winning the lottery and getting the first pick.
But they need that to happen.
The Nets will be moving to Brooklyn starting next season and will become one of the major markets in the NBA. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has drawn attention and brought more star power in the owners box, along with Jay-Z. However, they need to start producing on the court.
After acquiring Deron Williams midseason, the Nets were expected to make huge strides. But this season has been a disappointment for New Jersey, as it's not even close to making the playoffs.
Williams has had a great season, averaging 21 points a game and 8.8 assists. He will be a free agent at the end of the season and most likely has no desire to stay with the Nets.
The only way I could see Williams staying in New Jersey and moving with the team to Brooklyn is if it can acquire Dwight Howard in the offseason.
Howard has expressed that he would like to go to the Nets, but his word cannot be taken seriously, as he has changed his mind on many occasions.
There is a good chance that when the Nets head to Brooklyn next season, there won't be any player to promote. Davis is the only rookie in this draft class that has marketability along with a great game. He will shine under the bright lights, which he has proven with his performance in the NCAA tournament.
Nothing is worse for a new market then having a team that does not have any prospects for the future. When the Seattle Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City, they were building around a marketable player in Kevin Durant.
If the Nets acquire Davis, the fans in Brooklyn will have someone to look forward to seeing. Having him will also draw more attention from free agents who want to play with Davis to help create a winning team.
Brooklyn and the NBA will benefit from Davis going to the Nets. Maybe the Nets will get lucky, as the Knicks did in 1985 when Patrick Ewing went to New York.
