
This week, Pat Summitt, the head coach of the Tennessee women's basketball team, and the winningest coach in college basketball history, was named Sportswoman of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
Sports Illustrated has always been progressive when it comes to the portrayal of women in sports.
But even SI went through some growing pains in the early years.
We took a walk through the history of how women have been portrayed on the cover.
Many are iconic. Some are questionable. And a few might surprise you.
The first woman on the cover of SI came in just their third issue, ironically in a swimsuit (1954)
It was rare to see female athletes on the covers in the early years (1955)
Women were seen on the cover frequently, but not often as athletes (1955)
