It took a 9th-round TKO for Miguel Cotto to finally stop Antonio Margarito.
It took only three rounds for the Puerto Rican champion to bust open the Mexican's eye though.
Two things stood out in this battering beat down: no doctored hand wraps and the end of Marg's relevant career.
Cotto, who claimed Margarito used some form of plaster on his hand wraps in their first fight back in 2008, was noticeably unfazed by the Mexican's punches this time around. Margarito was caught entering the ring against Shane Mosely with loaded hand wraps the fight immediately following his Cotto victory.
Mosley TKO'd Margarito in 9 rounds also.
This is the third loss in Margarito's last four fights. If we factor in the first, and now questionable, Cotto bout he's only truly won one fight in the last three years.
Margarito's taken some serious punishment too. The Mosley, Pacquiao and Cotto fights have all left the Mexican looking progressively worse.
Although Margarito claims he is ready to "die in the ring", it will be awfully surprising if any state or country issues Margarito a license any time soon.
We know he's tough and was even looking for more rounds in last night's bout, but his surgically repaired eye will continue to be a problem for the duration of his career.
The eye, which was broken at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, was almost completely closed by the seventh round. Margarito was lucky the doctors let him go to the 9th.
Don't expect Margarito, who received 12 stitches in the eye after the fight, to be back in the ring soon.
If the sport allows him to come back at all it will be much of the same story. Do we really need to see that?
