LSU is the best team in the nation. They have played an unbelievable schedule and beaten everyone in their path, destroying good teams along the way. Alabama is one of the best teams in the country, nobody is denying that.
To have LSU and Alabama play again would be absolutely pointless. Alabama already lost to LSU. They aren't going to play for their conference championship in the SEC. So basically, the BCS would be having LSU slug it out against Georgia while Alabama sits on the couch and watches them, resting up and getting healthy. Then, if they go and beat LSU, both teams would have one loss. Both teams would have beaten each other for the other teams' loss. How are you going to crown one of them champions over the other?
Even if LSU loses to Georgia, they should still be in the national championship game. But then that would also make the whole SEC different, and make Alabama look even worse because then LSU would be a one-loss team.
So, who should get the chance to play LSU? My top choice would be Oklahoma State. In fact, this seems to be an easy decision. Their only loss was to Iowa State in double overtime, only a few days after a plane crash killed OSU's head and assistant women's basketball coaches. Oklahoma State's resume is also just flat-out more impressive than Alabama's. They average an absurd 49.8 points per game, good for second most in the nation. Alabama averages 36.0 ppg, which is 16th in the nation. OSU's strength of schedule is 10th, Alabama's is 38th. OSU has beaten four teams in the BCS top 25, Alabama has beaten only two. There is no good argument to put Alabama in the national championship game over Oklahoma State.
Other teams that deserve to be in it as much, if not more than Alabama are Stanford and Virginia Tech. Stanford's only loss was to Oregon, whose only losses were to LSU and a three-point loss to extremely underrated USC. Andrew Luck would give LSU a hell of a game, and it'd be a huge national draw, because the west coast would finally be somewhat interested.
Virginia Tech's only loss was to Clemson, who was ranked 13th at the time. VT's defense only gives up 15.5 points per game, seventh best in the nation. Assuming they win the ACC championship, they would be a heck of an opponent for LSU. They could match up speed-for-speed as well as anyone in the nation, and could give the shootout that everyone was hoping would come from the LSU/Alabama game—which was an incredibly boring 9-6 overtime game.
So, if we can't destroy the BCS, I just hope that the BCS doesn't destroy the potential for a great national championship game. Although it sucks, so it probably will.
