Notre Dame really has the best of both worlds when it comes to conference alignment. It is in the Big East for basketball and non-revenue sports but in football the school is independent and has its own clause which allows it to play for a BCS Bowl.
During all of the conference alignment that took place this past year in college football, some talk came up about the Irish joining the Big East for all sports. That talk has officially ended.
The only thing that would really force them to join a conference would be if everyone were in superconferences, thus not allowing them to schedule an opponent every week of the season. With that not happening, there is no reason for them to join any conference.
And if Notre Dame did want to join a conference for football, you can bet it wouldn’t be the Big East. The Big Ten and ACC are both better homes in terms of football as well as academic prowess.
Plus, the future of the BCS and automatic qualifying conferences could be in jeopardy as soon as 2014. Then it would be completely pointless for the school to join any conference.
The whole Notre Dame to the Big East thing was nice for fans of the conference but it should be officially over.
