Welcome return to Humberside Airport for Ryanair as it launches Alicante service

BUDGET airline Ryanair is being welcomed back to Humberside Airport.

The low-frills carrier has announced it is to operate services to Alicante in Spain from the Kirmington airport.

It signals a return for Ryanair to the region's airport after the firm was forced to pull its Dublin route in 2009, due to "overcapacity" in the market.

The twice-weekly service to Alicante, expected to be worth 1.5 million to the local economy, will begin on April 12.

Tony Lavan, the airport's managing director, said: "We are delighted to welcome Ryanair back to Humberside Airport.

"Alicante is a first choice destination in the local region.

"It is great to be able to make it available from Humberside again."

The addition of Alicante to the list of destinations served by Humberside will be welcomed by holidaymakers.

The Spanish airport is a popular gateway to resorts on the Costa Blanca, including Benidorm.

Mr Lavan said: "We are always seeking to increase our choice of destinations, and now look to the people of our region to support your local airport and make this destination a huge success".

The number of people using the airport has gradually decreased – amid growing competition – since 2003, when it achieved a record 500,000 passengers.

At the moment, about 320,000 passengers pass through Humberside's gates every year.

In response to this, the airport's owners, The MAG Group, drew up a business plan in 2007, with the aim of improving the numbers.

The addition of Ryanair flights will help the airport to fulfil its aim of raising annual passengers to one million by 2016.

Stephen McNamara, spokesman for Ryanair, said: "We believe the deal will provide for the demand for low-cost flights to Alicante, which continues to be a favourite among British holidaymakers."

According to Ryanair, it is estimated that the airline's service from Humberside will bring an extra 30,000 passengers to the airport annually, and generate up to 1.5 million for the local economy.

Mr McNamara said: "We hope this venture is successful and we would like to expand our list of destinations should the demand arise."

Flights to Alicante will depart every Tuesday and Saturday from April 12.

Prices start at 35.99 and more information is available by visiting www.ryanair.com
