We're on for a summer move

A 450,000 town council and community centre looks set to be opened in Hornsea by the summer.

Contractors Kemp Developments have been employed to transform the former Methodist Church Hall in Newbegin.

Colin O'Connor, Hornsea town clerk, told the Mail he hopes the building works will be completed by July or August.

He said: "As well as being a new home for the town council, the facility will provide much-needed accommodation in the town centre for the many organisations and groups that require space for their activities.

"It is envisaged that there will be an information hub, gallery space for local exhibitions and the potential for small conferences.

"By pioneering this move the town council is bringing back to life an otherwise redundant building in the town centre."

The plans were first announced in the Mail in August 2009.

The project will be funded by Hornsea Town Council by a public works loan over 25 years.

The current town hall in Burton Road, which used to be the former lifeboat station when the boat was pulled by horse and cart, has been the council home since 1984.

Mr O'Connor said it will be valued and then sold.

He said: "The council is seeking to restore confidence in the main street of Hornsea and will employ local people to carry out the work.

"We are endeavouring to provide facilities that will be the envy of any other town in the area, and indeed will encourage people to visit the centre of town to engage in activities in the new hall.

"The contractors are a local well-respected and award-winning company who will be using local labour to kick-start the regeneration of Newbegin."
