City Council challenging schools decision in High Court

NOTTINGHAM City Council is preparing to challenge the Government's decision to stop funding for new school buildings in the High Court in London.

The authority will be joined by a number of other councils at the judicial review over the Building Schools for the Future project.

The Coalition Government scrapped the scheme in July this year.

It would have seen Trinity School in Aspley and Top Valley School rebuilt, to a total cost of 33m.

But the Honourable Mr Justice Langstaff granted permission for a judicial review of the Secretary of State for Education's decision.

The case will start on Monday, with the first full day of evidence being on Tuesday.

Councillor David Mellen, portfolio holder for children's services, said: "We remain hopeful that the funding previously agreed will continue so that we can push ahead with our plans to transform teaching and learning and deliver 21st Century facilities."
