In Brief

HESSLE: A 61-year-old ex-serviceman is planning a 193-mile sponsored walk in aid of Help For Heroes.

Ex-Royal Navy serviceman Trevor Elton was inspired to tackle the walk after hearing about the bravery of former paratrooper Ben Parkinson, who lost both legs in a Taliban bomb blast in Afghanistan.

Lance Bombardier Parkinson, who walks with the help of a frame, defied predictions that he would never walk and now wants to win Strictly Come Dancing and run the London Marathon.

Mr Elton, a retired police officer from Hessle, said: "I saw this guy on TV, he had lost both legs and he was hoping to do the London Marathon.

"I was so inspired, I thought I will do a sponsored walk at 50 miles a day for Help For Heroes.

"I will not spend money on hotels overnight, I will take a sleeping bag and sleep rough."

Mr Elton, who will be walking from Hessle to his son's home in Long Stratton, Norfolk, is inviting local businesses to sponsor him.

DRIFFIELD: Pupils at Driffield School will tackle an Apprentice-style challenge in a "product wars" theme day.

Teams of Year 7 pupils will compete in a task to launch a new fruit smoothie drink.

The event on February 1 follows the success of previous theme days and will focus on thinking skills and team work.

Students will take on different roles to carry out market research, design recipes and create packaging for their smoothie drink.

BEVERLEY: A street collection raised 31.41 for Kenyan charity Bega Kwa Bega, which helps people living in the slums of the capital Nairobi.
