Everton vs. Liverpool: Jack Rodwell Red Card Ruins Derby Clash

Liverpool gained some luck in their match against Everton as Jack Rodwell was unrightfully sent off for his sliding tackle against star strike Luis Suarez.

This decision by referee Martin Atkinson should have just been a yellow card, if anything. Rodwell did get the ball in his attempt, but went spikes up.

If Rodwell doesn’t act the way he does – with his hands on his head like he knows what the outcome will be – maybe he doesn’t get the red card.

Referees can change games when they go to a straight red card. We have seen it time and time again throughout the history of the game. If it is a debatable decision, always go to a yellow card so the player doesn’t get sent off.

That simple change will allow for the players to determine outcomes of the game, not the referees.

But, Rodwell got the card and put his team in a hole for the rest of the game.

Liverpool took control of the game with the extra man. They possessed the ball 64 percent of the game compared to 36 for Everton. They also put more shots on target.

With the strikers that Liverpool has, it was just a matter of time before Everton conceded. Despite American Tim Howard’s quality performance, he allowed two goals to the Reds.

Andy Carroll scored his first premier goal of the season in the 71st minute. Suarez claimed the second goal in the 82nd minute to make the fans dislike him more than they already did.

After his celebration, fans threw bottles onto the pitch. The fans already threw coins onto the field prior to that as well.

Derby matches always have the extra feeling inside the stadium. It is a shame that the match had to be ruined by the referee.
