Carmelo Anthony Injury: New York Knicks Shouldn't Rush Return of Big Star

Carmelo Anthony suffered a rough ankle injury last week and he hopes to return to action on Monday night, but the New York Knicks have to be careful in how they handle the injury of their top player.

As the New York Daily News reports, Carmelo will try to play against the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

"It's sore, but if I can go, I will go,'' Carmelo said Sunday. "It's time to get going right now.''

While the Knicks are in dire need of a victory, pushing the return of Carmelo will only hurt them more. It may be "time to get going," but Carmelo and the Knicks have to think about the big picture.

Their leading scorer is obviously still in pain, and having him play through it will only do more damage. There are still plenty of games to play this season, which is why Carmelo needs to wait until he is 100 percent healthy.

Risking further injury just to play against the Magic is ludicrous. Sure, Orlando is on a roll and one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference at the moment, but the Knicks can still compete without Carmelo.

Should Carmelo try to play, there's a possibility his ankle gets worse, which will be devastating to the Knicks' season.

New York has lost two games in a row, a sign that they greatly miss Carmelo. However, rushing his comeback is not needed.

All it means is that guys like Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, Toney Douglas and Landry Fields need to step their game up. Shutting down Dwight Howard on Monday night is the key to a victory, so Stoudemire and Chandler have to play better defense to ensure the Knicks get a win.

Carmelo's health is the most important thing, which is why rushing his return would be absurd. New York must wait until Carmelo is no longer sore before they consider bringing him back into the lineup.
