SINCE the death of former Notts County player Richard Butcher three weeks ago, tributes have been pouring in from fans and former team-mates.
But the true strength of feeling towards the former Meadow Lane favourite was shown yesterday when more than 1,000 fans paid tribute to him at a memorial service.
And many Notts County fans were among those who went to Lincoln to pay their respects.
Iris Smith, chairwoman of the Notts County Supporters' Club, said: "The ceremony was a fitting tribute to a great player. It was a privilege to have him play for the club."
She said she would always remember his goal that saved the club from relegation, scored in May 2009 against Wycombe Wanderers.
Another fan, Ann Harvey, from Bingham, said: "He wasn't just a footballer, he was a gentleman."
Mr Butcher died at his home in Greater Manchester on January 10 at the age of 29. No cause of death was given at the opening of his inquest.
At yesterday's memorial ceremony, held at Lincoln City's Sincil Bank stadium, former team-mates paid their respects to Mr Butcher.
His coffin was carried into the ground by former Lincoln City players Alan Marriott and Ben Futcher, as well as Macclesfield Town players Paul Morgan and Simon Yeo.
Mr Marriott, who now plays for Mansfield Town, said he had wonderful memories of Mr Butcher. He said: "His loyalty was something to be admired, and he always refused to give up. He was gentle, caring and a great friend."
Mike Rance, of Macclesfield Town – Mr Butcher's last club – said he was a "complete professional" and was a key member of Keith Alexander's squad while at Lincoln City.
He said: "He was a delight to be with on and off the pitch."
The memorial event also included the performance of two songs by Vie Watson, who also sang at the wedding of Mr Butcher to Sarah last summer. The service was followed by a private service at Lincoln Crematorium. The full inquest will take place on June 8.
