Teen queen in semi-final for Miss GB crown

A HORNSEA teenager has been selected as a semi-finalist of the first Miss Teen Great Britain contest.

Jessica Samuel, 16, has been picked from hundreds of young teenagers, after originally entering the competition to build up her confidence.

The Hull College student, who studies health and social care, said: "To have won a place in the semi-final against teenagers across Great Britain is amazing. It would be great to make the final and represent Hornsea as Miss Teen Britain."

The competition is aimed at anyone aged 13 to 18, with the finalists competing for the crown, as well as 1,000.

In her application, Jessica has spoken about her fundraising work for Cancer Research.

She said: "Two or three years ago, my grandma and dog died of cancer in the same month.

"About a year ago, I started raising funds, taking part in catwalks for charity fashion shows and competing in the Race For Life event last year.

"This year I'm looking at doing a skydive.

"If I did win overall, I would donate some of the money to Cancer Research."

Among her biggest supporters is mother Elizabeth Ingham, who is proud of her daughter's achievements.

She said: "I am very excited, though I wasn't surprised she made the semi-finals.

"She is a pretty girl. Everyone tells me she is.

"In the past, she was the 2003 Hornsea Carnival princess's attendant and she has taken part in a few catwalks at places like Hornsea Freeport."

However, whatever the outcome of the competition, Jessica doesn't plan on being a model in the future.

She said: "I would rather do social work and work with children. I want to feel like I am doing something to really help people."

Holly Ikin, director of the competition, said: "Jessica has done fantastically well to reach the semi-finals.

"We have had more than 600 applications, with more still coming in.

"We loved her photos and her natural look. I predict great things for her."

If selected as a finalist, Jessica will be invited to the grand final in September at The Globe in Blackpool.

If successful, she will enjoy a day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and a pyjamas diva party.

Miss Ikin said: "To win Miss Teen Great Britain would be an incredible honour for any teen.

"The girls are judged on much more than looks. It is about the full package.

"The winner will not only win some incredible prizes, but a fantastic year as Miss Teen Great Britain."
