Why Texas Needs to Cut Ties with Mack Brown and Start over After Holiday Bowl

It's always difficult talking about a head coach being fired. Nobody likes to see somebody lose their job, especially if they've been with a program since 1998 and are 3-1 in BCS bowl games.

But after the Holiday Bowl, Texas head coach Mack Brown should be shown the door.

Sure, this may not sit well with many Longhorns fans, but when the coach doesn't produce, some type of action has to take place. This has been a big year for head coaches as it seems like there is a coach being fired every day. Mack Brown should be the next to go.

Last season coach Brown had his first losing season since 1989. It was his first losing season ever at Texas. This season his team is a sub-par 7-5 and had to settle for a berth to the Holiday Bowl. In the last two seasons combined his team has gone 6-11 against the Big 12 with losses against Iowa State, Missouri and Kansas State.

Keep in mind that the Longhorns have a top 25 recruiting class every season. And that's being modest—most of the time they're ranked in the top 10 or top five.

For a team that has national championship expectations and has the players to get it done every season, should there be an excuse?

Looking at some of the other coaches that were recently let go like Mike Sherman and Rick Neuheisel, they were both let go after four OK seasons and, if given more time, could have probably turned things around. They both recruited extremely well, but that wasn't good enough. And Texas A&M and UCLA don't have the same high expectations to succeed as much as Texas does.

“I can’t even imagine why someone would start something like this,” Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. “It’s just something we want to put to bed. It’s certainly not the truth. And people ought to be more careful about what they are reporting."

Brown is one of the highest paid coaches in the country, making over $5 million every season. He has one of the most talented teams on his roster every season; two sub-par seasons have to begin raising some eyebrows.

I get that he is a great head coach and the majority of the people love him in Texas but at the end of the day, this is a business. You either produce or you won't be around much longer.

This season the Longhorns have the top recruiting class coming in, with nearly a top player at every position it seems like. They also have an extremely talented team returning. Combine all of these great players and there is no excuse why the Longhorns shouldn't be competing for a national championship.

Will Brown be the coach to do it?

Only time will tell.
