Residents in crime ridden street benefit from police crackdown

POLICE say a crackdown on anti-social residents in a Mansfield street has been a huge success.

Since September, three residents in Lord Street have been given acceptable behaviour contracts, while one resident has been served with an anti-social behaviour injunction.

These require them to abide by a certain set of rules and behaviour and give police the power to take them to court if they breach these.

There were also four evictions from homes on the street – one was carried out by Mansfield District Council, while the others were done by private landlords.

Occupants of four addresses also left voluntarily.

During the operation, police discovered that those living in seven Lord Street houses were illegally extracting electricity.

The electricity to each house was subsequently disconnected.

Police have also carried out a number of search warrants in the street since September, leading to three men being arrested in connection with drug offences. Two were charged with production of cannabis, while the other was released on bail pending further inquiries.

The district council's environmental health team has also served enforcement notices on residents to remove any waste that has built up outside their homes. The occupants of two premises were told they would be evicted if the state of their premises did not improve.

Inspector Neil Williams said: "The street was a magnet for offenders who were committing crime in and around the town centre.

''Auto crime and burglary offences were being linked back to the street, as well as anti-social behaviour and drug use.

"Officers and neighbourhood wardens have been visiting residents to discuss the operation and the feedback we have had so far is very positive – some of them have commented that they have never known the area to be so quiet.

"We have made huge strides in Lord Street but we will not become complacent – we will continue to work with the residents there to make it a safer place for everyone."
