HULL: A dedicated family man who slipped and fractured his foot in an accident at work died after developing a blood cot in his lungs, an inquest was told.
Hull Coroner's Court heard how 36-year-old Mark Steeley had a less than one in 1,000 chance of developing the blood clot from his injury.
Described by his mother as a "gentle giant who could always be found playing football with his nephews", the Gipsyville resident was involved in some horseplay with a colleague when the accident took place in a car park at Hull's King George Dock in August.
Mr Steeley, a dock worker for Jenkins Shipping Port Services, was working for Associated British Ports at the time.
He died in Hull Royal Infirmary two weeks later after complaining of shortness of breath and pain in his chest.
The blood clot had developed in his leg before spreading to his lungs.
Assistant deputy coroner Professor Robert Forrest said: "This is a tragic case of a young man who has suffered such a trivial injury."
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
