Man stole 5,000 from pensioner

A SHERWOOD man has been jailed for conning pensioners out of thousands of pounds.

Matthew Shipman befriended pensioners before raiding their bank accounts.

Southampton Crown Court heard Shipman conned one victim after pretending to share an interest in bird watching.

Prosecutor David Richards said Shipman's motive was to get hold of his bank card and PIN.

He stole nearly 5,000 during seven withdrawals from his account.

"It was all done without a pang of conscience," said Recorder Alan Large. "He was not in the best of health but I am certain what you did caused him considerable setbacks."

Shipman, 33, of Valley Road, Sherwood, admitted ten counts of fraud and one each of theft, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

The judge jailed him for three years and seven months.

"They were vulnerable and there was considerable grooming to get yourself into their confidence," said Mr Large.

In mitigation, Zoe Van Der Bosch said Shipman had been addicted to cannabis and in debt to his supplier. He acknowledged his behaviour was unacceptable .
