Florida head coach Will Muschamp is making the rounds in the state of Florida, visiting Gator booster clubs.
The second-year head coach visited the Sarasota and Manatee County Gator Clubs in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., and according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, hasn't ruled out playing two quarterbacks in 2012.
“If we need to play two, we'll play two," Muschamp said.
The old saying goes, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks." However, in Florida's case, it could work.
Sophomores Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel exited spring practice neck-and-neck in the battle to win the top spot on the depth chart.
Ideally, Muschamp would like to have one player separate himself from the other. That being said, the fact that Driskel and Brissett can do different things at the quarterback position could provide Florida with a nice wrinkle this season.
Brissett is more of a prototypical drop-back passer, and was Charlie Weis' prized recruit when Weis was offensive coordinator in Florida. He has a big arm and can stretch the field, but has the pocket presence to check down.
Driskel, on the other hand, was the nation's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback out of high school, according to 247Sports.com. He's not just a scrambler, though. Driskel has the arm to be a star in the SEC, but is still a little raw in the passing department.
As long as one or the other doesn't get typecast by new offensive coordinator Brent Pease, a two-quarterback system could work.
I know, I know—Florida rotated quarterbacks for the last two seasons and the offense was a disaster. That's true, but the absence of a true between-the-tackles running back was a big part of Florida's offensive woes.
The battle may be ongoing, but the play of Brissett and Driskel during spring practice seemed to eliminate concern about the position from the Gator faithful. The two combined for six passes for more than 20 yards in the spring game. The Gators had just 35 passing plays of more than 20 yards in 2011.
A two-quarterback system at Florida isn't ideal, but Brissett and Driskel are different enough to make it work if that's the direction that Muschamp decides to go.
