The flyweights got UFC on FOX 4 started on a great note, putting on an entertaining—albeit brief—bout. John Moraga walked away the victor via first-round KO after putting Ulysses Gomez away with a vicious standing elbow and following it up with punches.
Gomez was a game opponent, but was clearly outmatched on the feet and unable to get the fight to the ground. Moraga was able to fight his fight and pick Gomez apart from range.
What we'll remember about this fight
The finish, naturally.
If a fight doesn't make it to the judges' scorecards, the end part is usually the best part, and this fight was no exception. It was a beautiful KO from Moraga, started off by a standing elbow, which is a move we are seeing more and more often these days.
What we learned about Gomez
In his UFC debut, we basically just learned that Gomez is not as good a striker as Moraga and his chin is not made of granite.
Don't be fooled, though. This guy is a legitimate top flyweight, and he will be back.
What we learned about Moraga
He has potential to do big things in the flyweight division.
125 lbs is the UFC's newest and most shallow division, so a couple impressive wins would be enough to launch anyone into title contention.
What's next for Gomez
Tim Elliot is also 0-1 in the UFC. Match 'em up.
What's next for Moraga
Small as it is, most of the UFC's flyweight division is currently booked up, so Moraga will have to play the waiting game. The loser of John Dodson vs. Jussier da Silva might be appropriate.
