San Francisco 49ers Free Agency: Brandon Lloyd Must Be Lured Back to SF

While the San Francisco 49ers added one high-profile wide receiver already, there is still work to be done with that group as a whole. That is why a reunion with Brandon Lloyd would be a perfect fit for what this franchise is trying to build.

According to Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Lloyd is one of the many receivers that the 49ers have looked at this week.

The team hosted two receivers Wednesday, Raiders free agent Chaz Schilens and St. Louis' Brandon Lloyd, and plans to look at more wideouts later in the week.

That includes the New York Giants' Mario Manningham and Denver's Eddie Royal, who visited San Diego on Wednesday. Another receiver the 49ers were interested in, Dallas' Laurent Robinson, signed a five-year deal with Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Lloyd's history with the 49ers is not one that either side would like to brag about. He was productive during his three seasons in San Francisco, catching 105 passes for 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his attitude and work ethic left a lot to be desired.

That is why the team traded him after the 2005 season, despite being their only playmaker at wide receiver.

However, Mike Sando of ESPN.com wrote that this new regime in San Francisco is going to give both sides an opportunity to bury old grudges.

Lloyd's reputation in San Francisco as an immature player unconcerned with winning appears outdated. He is now 30 years old and meeting expectations. The 49ers have largely new leadership, creating the opportunity for a fresh start.

Lloyd would be the perfect complementary piece for Randy Moss. He is a good route runner with the ability to go over the middle and make plays that Moss isn't going to be asked to do.

Michael Crabtree looks like a slot/possession receiver, at best. The 49ers can't afford to put all their eggs in the Randy Moss basket. He is a ticking time bomb that will explode if he doesn't like anything.

The 49ers need at least one more receiver on the outside who can stretch the field and keep defenses honest. Lloyd is the best of the bunch, and appears willing to give them at least a chance to sign him.

They need to take it.
