USC Football Recruiting 2012: OT-DE Chad Wheeler Commits to Trojans, Drops ASU

Chad Wheeler from Santa Monica High switched his commitment from Arizona State to USC today after receiving an offer in the last few days according to Rivals.com.

Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals, the 6’6", 260-pound Wheeler plays both OT and DE, but the Trojans need him more as an OT. He will get to campus in January 2012.

This makes Wheeler especially attractive because the Trojans have early enrollee slots that won’t affect their NCAA mandated 15 scholarship limitation in 2012, and there is a need for OT especially if left tackle Matt Kalil leaves early for the NFL.

Wheeler also had offers from Cal, Arizona, Washington State, Iowa State and Harvard. Other Pac-12 schools were also interested.

He told Rivals.com, “That’s a real honor. There is a great tradition at that school and it’s amazing to be part of that family.”

Wheeler became the Trojans 11th commitment for 2012.
