Radford shooting took place yards from teacher's memorial party

A SHOOTING in Radford took place just yards from a street party being held in memory of a young teacher who died of meningitis.

A large crowd of people, including children, were at the party in Brixton Road and neighbouring Dulwich Road on Sunday afternoon, to mark the second anniversary of the burial of Jade Thomas.

Police said a 21-year-old man turned up at the Queen's Medical Centre shortly after 4pm on Sunday with gunshot wounds to his arm and leg, following an incident in Dulwich Road.

A Notts police spokesman said: "We are aware there was a street party going on around that time. We are pursuing all lines of inquiry at this stage.

"The victim is still in hospital in a serious but stable condition. His injuries are not life-threatening."

Jade, from Radford, was on a dream holiday in Miami with best friend Danielle Brailsford in April 2009 when she fell ill with meningitis.

The 26-year-old, who was an IT teacher at Nottingham Bluecoat School and Technology College in Aspley, died in a Florida hospital just days after falling ill. Around 1,500 people attended her funeral at Trent Vineyard in Lenton.

One person, who knew of the street party but did not attend, told the Post: "These sorts of gatherings bring people from all over.

"This is something that children may have witnessed. It's absolutely terrible."

A police cordon remained in place yesterday in Dulwich Road and adjoining alleyways to allow forensic examinations to be carried out. Patrols have also been increased in the area.

Yesterday morning, a number of empty plastic glasses and a few bottles, possibly from the street party, could be seen in Dulwich Road and Brixton Road. A uniformed police officer was guarding the cordon as plain clothes officers made house to house inquiries.

Local residents spoke of their concern.

One 47-year-old man, who lives in Brixton Road, said: "There was a street party in Dulwich Road and all I could hear was music from 11am. There was no end of people.

"The police arrived between 3pm and 4pm. There were two cars at first and I thought 'what's going off?' The music had stopped."

One 32-year-old woman who did not want to be named, but lives on Brixton Road, said: "There was a party. Someone had come round before saying there was going to be one and asking for the neighbours' approval."

A 37-year-old woman living in Dulwich Road said: "CID came round and asked if we'd heard anything or seen anything.

"There was a street party going on at the time. The music was so loud. There were quite a few people and big speakers on the street."

An advert for the street party in Jade's memory had been placed on the social networking site Facebook.

A note on the site read: "It's a family event so please be on your best behaviour on the day... it's all about peace, love and togetherness."

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the shooting incident to contact them.
