Driver almost hit pram in bid to escape police

A DRIVER who almost hit a pram when his car mounted the kerb has been electronically tagged and banned from driving for three years.

Callum Nugent was spotted driving dangerously by police officers in St Ann's.

He accelerated away after seeing their patrol car and there was a short chase.

The Volvo car Nugent was driving mounted a kerb, forcing a member of the public who was pushing a pram to move aside.

Martin Elwick, defending, said: "This was a short period of very stupid and, of course, dangerous driving.

"Thankfully no one was injured. There was a short chase. He gave up."

Sentencing Nugent, Judge James Sampson told him: "Fortunately it was short-lived.

"There was no injury and there was no damage."

Nugent, of Warton Avenue, St Ann's, was found guilty of dangerous driving by a jury after a trial.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that after officers stopped him in June 2010 they let him go instead of taking him into custody.

He was bailed to a police station several weeks later.

During his trial, Nugent denied he had been driving the car.

Mr Elwick said: "It is just reliant on the police officer's observations and clearly the jury believed those observations."

The court heard the 22-year-old had previous driving offences on his record and he had completed a community sentence in the past.

Previous offences include failing to stop, driving without a licence and driving with excess alcohol.

For the dangerous driving offence in St Ann's, Nugent was given a six-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

He must complete 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also given a three-month curfew, meaning he cannot leave his house between 8pm and 6am, and will be electronically tagged to enforce this.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years.
