Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden dead

U.S. officials have confirmed that after searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead.

Bin Laden, mastermind of the attacks of 9/11 and founder of Al Qaeda, perished in a U.S. attack on a mansion outside Islamabad.
