Officers deserve praise for netting crime gangs

THEY have inflicted misery on hundreds of people across Hull and the East Riding.

But now, nine prolific gangs of burglars have finally been brought to justice.

The gangs – including 89 individual offenders – were caught following a ten-month undercover police operation.

Humberside Police dedicated a huge amount of time and resources into Operation Iris and deserve great credit for the job they have done.

Not only have they caught dozens of offenders – resulting in prison sentences totalling 30 years being imposed by the courts – they have also reunited hundreds of victims of crime with their stolen belongings.

These burglars, with no thought for the trauma they were causing their victims, stole items of great sentimental, as well as monetary value.

Most of the victims will undoubtedly have feared their belongings would never be returned.

But the detectives working on the case have done a superb job reuniting them with their stolen items.

The excellent work done by the police in this case will hopefully have a lasting impact on crime across the region.

Realistically, most of the offenders will soon be free again after escaping lengthy prison sentences.

But their network of gangs has been smashed. Through their lengthy investigations, the police have built up a detailed picture of who has been behind so many of the burglaries across East Yorkshire.

Detectives know who they are now and will surely be keeping a close eye on them in the future.

Hopefully, these lowlife criminals will face a swift return to jail if they offend again.
