In Brief

EAST YORKS: A charity that makes dreams come true for sick children in East Yorkshire is appealing for 25 people to take part in the Great North Swim.

When You Wish Upon A Star grants wishes for youngsters with terminal and incurable diseases, including sending them on a trip to Lapland.

The one mile open-water Great North Swim will take place at Low Wood Marina at Windermere in the Lake District on the weekend of June 17 to 19.

Swimmers will be asked to raise a minimum of 200 for the charity and the entry fee of 37 should be paid at the time of registering.

Joanne Wright of the charity said: "This year, it is really important that we actively seek new ways in which to bring in funding and appeal to people to come forward and help us raise much-needed funds so our work can continue."

To register, call 01472 827100 or e-mail joanne@whenyouwish.org.uk

EAST YORKS: The East Riding's independent health watchdog said it will keep a close eye on how patient care is affected as changes in the local NHS are made.

As reported in the Mail, NHS Hull and NHS East Riding Of Yorkshire are set to merge with NHS North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus in a "cluster" arrangement.

The moves comes after the Government's Health And Social Care Bill was introduced into Parliament on January 19.

Geoff Pearson, acting chair at East Riding of Yorkshire Local Involvement Network (Link), said the arrangement is "roughly equivalent" to the former Humber Area Health Authority.

He said: "The Government of the day decided that such an arrangement was unsatisfactory, being too remote from the patient."

WEST HULL: A Fairtrade event and coffee morning will take place at Derringham Bank Methodist Church in Willerby Road from 10am to 11.30am on March 12.

Fairtrade products and recipes will be available.
