A GROUND-breaking ceremony has signalled the start of construction at the site of Beverley's 19 million community hospital.
Building work is now under way at the 10-acre site in Swinemoor Lane.
Karen Knapton, chairman of NHS East Riding Of Yorkshire, officially broke the ground for the main hospital building yesterday.
She was joined by members of the town's community liaison committee and others who have been closely involved in the project.
She said: "It is fantastic news for everyone concerned.
"It has been quite a journey to get to this stage and we will now begin to see the culmination of all the hard work.
"Throughout the project we have really focused on the people who are going to use the hospital and how it will help deliver better health outcomes for patients with long-term conditions within our community."
The site set-up is complete and work has started.
Work to construct the entrance to the hospital, footpath widening, and new signal junctions will get under way this month. Following planning approval last year, the scheme was delayed for six months following the discovery of a great crested newt, a protected species.
Archaeological surveys also had to be carried out before work could start.
NHS East Riding has described the new hospital as "innovative" and say it meets the highest environmental standards.
Clinicians who will be working at the hospital have been involved throughout the development.
The hospital is due to open next spring.
