In Brief

HULL: Children's author David Almond will today meet schoolchildren from the city.

The author of Skellig will speak to pupils from Sydney Smith School and Eastfield Primary School as part of the University of Hull's children's writing event.

Professor Martin Goodman, director of the Philip Larkin Centre, said: "The work of David Almond is truly exciting and appeals to a wide range of people.

"I'm sure those attending will really benefit from his insight and experience."

EAST YORKS: Administrators of Focus DIY chain have agreed the sale of 13 stores to Wickes Building Supplies.

It follows the news that B&Q owner Kingfisher has already agreed to buy up to 31 stores for 23 million.

But administrators Ernst And Young have refused to say whether the Focus stores in Goole or Beverley are being bought.

Focus went into administration earlier this month. Its Focus stores are remaining open for business.

HOOK: An open gardens day takes place in Hook near Goole next month.

People are invited to see residents' gardens in aid of Hook In Bloom on Sunday, June 26, from noon to 5pm. For details, call 01405 769725 or visit www.hookinbloom.co.uk

EAST YORKS: A book written by East Riding town crier Michael Wood has gone on sale.

Poetry In Motion Pictures depicts Michael Wood's experience of working as a town crier in Hollywood, gives an abridged history of American cinema, and takes a fun look at cinema-going in the UK.

It is available in Waterstone's in Jameson Street, Hull city centre, and WH Smiths in Toll Gavel, Beverley, for 9.99.
